The Brief
Ben Stork, a leading fitness coach with over 30 years of experience, approached us with a vision to transform his innovative mental health plan into an app. His interest in teenage wellbeing grew after his daughter's struggles, which motivated him to research and engage with experts to better support young people. This led to the creation of the Biorythms.Exercise.Nutrition (B.E.N) programme, designed to empower teenagers by helping them understand the connection between their metabolic health and mental wellbeing, encouraging personal accountability and growth.
The app was to be designed specifically for children and teenagers to track their mental health and wellbeing, focusing on monitoring the overall wellbeing of a class or year group rather than individual students.
A key objective was to help students become more self aware without feeling like they were being checked up on. The app needed to be easy to use, simple to understand, and clean in design, tailored for young users.
One of Ben’s top priorities was ensuring that all data collected remained anonymous whilst still being linked to each child for personalised insights, a challenge that required some creative problem solving!
The Process
We worked closely with Ben, dedicating significant time to carefully plan how the app would function, what data would be recorded, and how it would seamlessly translate into a health tracker system that children and teenagers could easily use. Using prototypes designed in Adobe XD, we transformed our concepts into a functional, testable app before moving into development. Once we were satisfied with the functionality, our development team took the finalised designs and built the app using C# and .Net Maui.
We also designed and built a simple one page website to accompany the app, providing Ben with a platform to promote the app and provide information to prospective buyers. The website serves as a straightforward and effective tool to support the app's launch and outreach efforts.
You can check out the app on the apple app store here.
The Outcome
The app was rolled out to a select number of schools at the start of the academic year for testing, and so far, feedback has been positive from both staff and pupils. Students have found it easy to log and track their wellness, while staff are confidently monitoring the overall wellbeing of year groups. The successful test phase highlights the app's effectiveness in supporting both student self-awareness and staff oversight.
Ongoing Support
The app is still in its early stages, having been designed to reach a minimum viable product (MVP) for initial release, with ample room for growth as the budget allows. Ben and his team are now exploring the addition of new features, including enhanced user profiles and a reporting feature to track various aspects of wellbeing across specific pupil groups, further expanding the app's functionality.
